Translate a survey

Offer your survey in several languages, so every respondent reads the questions in the language they understand best.

Before you start

  • Finish writing your questions first. Every change to the original text needs a new translation, and a new approval.
  • Available languages: Arabic, English, French, Turkish and Russian.

Turn on translation

  1. Open the survey, click Options, then Settings.
  2. Turn on Translate Questions & Options for Respondents.
  3. Under Languages to translate into, tick the languages you want.
  4. Choose the default language respondents see first. They can still switch to any other language you ticked.
  5. Click Save Settings.

Note Save your settings before translating. Otherwise the translation uses the languages you saved last, not the ones ticked on the screen.

Translate

  1. Click Translate now.
  2. The translation runs in the background. You'll see Translating in the background... with its progress. You can leave the page.
  3. When it's done, each language shows its status:
Colour Meaning
Grey Not translated yet
Amber Translated, waiting for your review. Respondents can't see it yet
Green Approved. Respondents can choose it

A message tells you when translations are waiting. Click Review now to check them. See Review and approve translations.

After you edit the survey

If you add a question or change the original wording, the screen tells you how many texts still need translating. Click Translate now again.

Only the new or changed texts are translated, and your corrections to other texts are kept.

Warning When new text is translated, that language goes back to waiting for review, and respondents see the survey in its original language until you approve it again. This makes sure respondents never see a translation nobody has read.

The daily translation limit

Translation uses a shared daily allowance. If it runs out partway through, what was already translated is kept. Click Translate now again after midnight to finish the rest.
