Use the Collect app

This page is for field collectors: how to set up the app, collect answers without internet, and send them.

Before you go to the field

You need:

  • the access code your supervisor gave you,
  • a phone or tablet with a modern browser,
  • an internet connection for the first step only.

1. Open and install the app

  1. Open the link your supervisor sent you. You can also start from the sign-in page: tap Install the field collection app to install it straight away, or Open the field data collection app to just open it.
  2. When the app offers Install Pulseform Collect, tap Install. Some devices have no install button, so the app shows the steps instead:
    • iPhone or iPad: tap the Share button (at the bottom in Safari, in the address bar in other browsers), then Add to Home Screen.
    • Mac with Safari: choose File, then Add to Dock.
    • Android with Firefox: open the browser menu (⋮), then tap Install.

The app now opens from your home screen, Dock or Start menu like any other app, with or without internet. Its icon carries a small clipboard badge, so you can tell it apart from the main platform's icon.

3. Collect answers

  1. Tap Open form.
  2. Fill in the respondent's answers. You can also add Respondent Details (Optional), such as a name, location or notes. Your supervisor may have turned the name and location boxes off to keep respondents anonymous. The notes box is always there, and what you write in it is always kept. The app doesn't check text formats, such as a phone number pattern. Type each answer carefully: your supervisor can see which answers don't match the expected format and may ask you about them.
  3. At the end, choose:
    • Send: the answer is ready. It's sent now if you're online, or waits until you are.
    • Save as draft: to finish it later.

The top bar shows whether you're Online or Offline. You can keep collecting either way.

The four tabs

Tab What's in it
Start new form Open a new blank form, and see your remaining limit
Drafts Answers you saved to finish later, and any answers that were refused
Ready to send Answers waiting for a connection
Sent Answers that reached the server

4. Send your answers

You don't need to do anything special. When your phone is back online, the app sends everything in Ready to send automatically. You can also tap Send all.

Sending twice never creates duplicates. The server recognizes an answer it has already received.

Warning Send as often as you can, whenever you have signal. Answers that haven't been sent exist only on your phone.

If some answers are refused

If you see Some responses were refused. Open Drafts to see why:

  1. Open Drafts. Refused answers are marked Errors, with the reason under each one.
  2. If you can fix it (for example, a missing answer), tap Edit, correct it, and send it again.
  3. If you can't fix it (for example, you reached your limit), don't delete it. Tap Export as CSV and give the file to your supervisor.

See Collector quotas for what to do when you reach your limit.

Signing out

Sign out of this device removes the survey and deletes every answer on the phone that hasn't been sent, including refused ones. Before signing out:

  1. Send everything in Ready to send.
  2. Export anything left in Drafts with Export as CSV.
